Excerpt, "Twin Wave"
When we woke up we headed towards the airport on our daily routine, because there were always loose coins.
“Times are tough,” I said while we picked coins out of the fountain.
“I know, but we can’t do anything about it," he replied.
“What should we do next, job wise?” I said.
“I’m thinking of joining the marines because it pays well. I'll make a difference, I'll travel to heaven knows what kinds of places, and I looked into it at the library and if you spend twenty years there you get a penchant which means they pay you after retirement,” he said.
“You always said that I was a fighter. Like that time I knocked that guy out when he called us trash," he continued sarcastically.
I laughed but, deep down I had no idea what I was going to do in my life. "Maybe I should look into careers too," I thought.
We started collecting recyclables for money in the trash cans. It was depressing facing the people watching us. It is literally the look they give the homeless when they pick through trash, disgusted. A little boy asked why we were doing this, and I ran off crying towards the women’s restroom. I was going through a rough time.
We started to walk around the city. Two hours had passed and the thought of what I would be doing in life was still lingering.
“Hey, what do you think I should pursue as a job Domitri?” I said out of the blue.
“First of all, hay is for horses,” he chuckled
“Second of all that’s completely up to you," he continued.
We walked over to Modern Sushi to get some food. I saw a flyer saying that they were hiring people to make sushi.
“Even if we are old enough we do not know how make sushi,” Domitri said.
"We can give it a shot we need a job, we are desperate," I mumbled because it made me think of being a normal kid with a normal life, just sitting at home with their family watching TV and laughing. It made me feel like I was going to burst into tears but, it is already bad enough when you dig through trash and have one pair of clothes you’ve had for almost a year.
I remember thinking to myself all the time, "What did I do to my parents? Why did they give us away? Was it to ruin our life - or because their own parents had ruined their lives, so they didn’t to do the same to us... and gave us away to be safe?" I would think about this multiple times a day. I do not know if that thought was necessarily bad or if it was for my own good so one day I will have a head start when I’m not homeless and have a good job and family...
If I had one wish to get anything in the entire world it would be to have a family again. I think Domitri thinks the same thing. some kids probably wish they could be like us so they do not have to do chores but I would do chores all day every day if it meant food and a roof over my head.
“First thing tomorrow we can go see if we are eligible to work at Modern Sushi.” Domitri said.
I was so happy when I heard that because it meant maybe this was a start to a better life.
I couldn’t sleep all night I do not know if it was because we were under a highway and people were honking their horns or if it was because we might get a real job tomorrow. When it was morning I didn't want to get up because I got no sleep and if I was tired it would make us look even worse and we probably wouldn't get the job.
When we got to Modern Sushi and when we went in everyone was just started staring at us making us feel uncomfortable and not wanted. I wondered why and then I looked at the menu and the prices were so expensive and now I know why we were getting stared at as if we were a disgrace to the face of the Earth.
When I asked about the job offers the employ was about to laugh her head off and it made me want to punch her in the face as hard as I could. She told us over this way and brought us to the manager's office.
“The first question he asked us was if we were involved in any criminal activity.”
We both didn’t respond and it probably made it suspicious and I felt like we were not going to get it my began to race and yelled off the top of my lungs, no!
“Ok I’m going to need a background check otherwise you're out of here.” The manager said.
The next thing he asked us was can I check your ID’s but I told we were not old enough and that we would never commit a crime.
“I’m not suppose to do this without identification but, I’ll make an acception.”
I started jumping up and down because he told how much we would be making. He told us we will make twelve dollars an hour. I thought we would only get three dollars an hour and even that's good for a part time job.
When we got our first order we had one problem we didn’t know how to make sushi so we just threw some fish on the grill.
“What’s the hold up? We have lots of angry customers waiting for food," the manager said.
I said as fast as I could, "We do not know how to make sushi!" I immediately realized what I'd said had ruined our only chance, how could this get any worse...
